I do love cave systems, and I had a high old time plumbing the depths of Somerset’s two most famous locations. Cheddar Gorge Caves are nicely lit, so once I got the settings right I managed to mine some very interesting shots. Wookey Hole is more artfully lit, but it’s darker and more treacherous, with ongoing work to open up new galleries. I was accompanied by a guide throughout, and as I was the only visitor I had more freedom to explore. The local legend of the Witch of Wookey Hole is said to have plagued many visitors down the years (and there’s a story about a dead potholer asking for directions to the exit, but we won’t go there). I left well alone, and I didn’t even photograph her. Well, you never know, do you? Both locations are used to store locally produced cheeses. If you’re a fan of dairy produce you should take a look. Each batch of cheddar is matured over a year or more, and the aroma will knock you off your feet (in a good way).
